Sometimes the best things are in your own backyard! Villa Maria is located on the quay between the Lucerne railroad station and the Swiss Museum of Transport. The walk offers wonderful views of Lake Lucerne and the mountains of Central Switzerland in both directions, such as the Rigi and the famous Pilatus (pictured). Of course, there are also various restaurants along the way where you can enjoy the view in peace and quiet.
It is possible to hike around the entire perimeter of Lake Lucerne: the route is called the Waldstätterweg and consists of seven stages. A beautiful, easy stage is the one from Küssnacht to Lucerne, where you walk through the Wagenmoos nature reserve, pass by Meggenhorn Castle and end up in front of Hotel Villa Maria. The route is 17 kilometers long and it takes around 4.5 hours, not including breaks to stop and marvel and picnic by the lake!
From Hotel Villa Maria, you can reach Meggenhorn Castle in less than 30 minutes by bus or in under an hour on foot. You can also reach this destination by boat. You get on on the "Verkehrshaus-Lido" pier (11-minute walk) and you arrive at the "Meggenhorn" pier 15 minutes later. The magnificent castle residence is right in front of you. The castle and the bistro in the orangery are open in the summer months, while the park, with its hydrangea collection, is accessible all year round.
Lake Lucerne is the blue heart of Central Switzerland. Here you can swim, do standup paddleboarding, sail, go pedal boating and much more. If you prefer to combine the lake with doing nothing at all, a boat trip is a great option. You can get on board either at the "Verkehrshaus-Lido" pier, which is an 11-minute walk from Hotel Villa Maria, or at the piers right by the train station. The Lucerne Navigation Company offers short and long tours, theme rides, sunset cruises... You will almost always find a restaurant on board. Incidentally, you can combine your boat trip with trip destinations such as the Rigi or Mount Pilatus.
The Seebodenalp recreation area is located between Küssnacht and the Rigi. At 1030 meters above sea level, you have a magnificent view of Lake Lucerne and can go on shorter and longer hikes (including to the Rigi). There are campfire sites for barbecuing and rustic alpine inns to make stops at.
The quickest way to get from Hotel Villa Maria to the Seebodenalp takes around one hour; or you can take a cable car from Küssnacht am Rigi.
