Hotel Villa Maria Lucerne

History

A look back in time

The Villa Maria guest house was built in 1950 by Marie Steinegger-Wetter. She was also known for the now defunct Hotel Bernerhof on Seidenhofstrasse in Lucerne, which she successfully managed during the Second World War, and later for the legendary Chuchichäschtli restaurant. She had hired P. A. Furger as her architect and created an astonishingly timeless building with him.

The Villa Maria guest house, built in 1950, was added to the older villas to the east of the Hausermatte, which had not been built over yet, by dividing a plot of land. The building is characteristic of post-war architecture: a three-storey stone building under a gable roof with simple, regular two or three-paneled lattice windows and an attic enlarged by shed dormers. The guest house, which was originally only on the ground and first floor, was extended to include the second floor in 1970.

Villa Maria has been largely preserved in its original state, with the exception of the changes made in 1970. It is a prime example of high-quality post-war architecture with good craftsmanship details.
